We wrapped up our summer board meeting and have some important updates to share.

Symposium:

Thank you to all who came out to Pittsburgh, PA and made AALSO 2024 a tremendous success. Huge shout out to Nicole Gioia, Paul Moylett and all the staff at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for hosting us Monday evening and sharing their wonderful facility with us.

We will be in Portland, OR for 2025 with all the events being held in the Holiday Inn Portland - Columbia Riverfront Hotel. The hotel is located on Hayden Island and is about a 20 minute drive from the airport and very close to downtown Vancouver, WA. Kyle Hascall and the staff at the Oregon Zoo are really looking forward to hosting us on Monday evening and the Vendor Board is working through a few different options for our Tuesday evening event.

Registration Opening November 4th, 2024:

Vendor booth selection is changing this year.  We have been through many discussions on better ways to assign booths and the board has decided to move forward with a metric. Booth selection will be based on these metrics rather than a straight first come, first served method.

The metrics include:

  • years exhibited
  • years as a sponsor
  • years of workshop support

Each metric carries a weight for each category.  For the years exhibited, this is the most heavily weighted and is a yes or no answer.  It doesn't matter how many booths a company has, just how many years the company has exhibited. For the sponsors and workshop support, this is based on a yes or no answer as well.  These two categories are weighted based on how many years a company has sponsored or supported our workshops.  In this case, the level of sponsorship is not considered, only the number of years a company has participated.

We appreciate those who have been with us through thick and thin and made sure we had the funds needed to continue even in the worst circumstances.  This new metric is our way of honoring these long term committments. We also appreciate our new vendors.  To be fair, there really is no bad placement in our shows as we work hard to make sure everyone has exposure to our operators.

Once we start assigning booths, the vendors will be sorted based on this metric and secondly by when they registered.  If you register late, then your place in line will be based on the same metrics and the new chronological order. We intend to begin assigning booths in early December.  We will announce our cutoff for the first round one week prior so that everyone has fair warning.

We ask that everyone book hotel rooms as soon as they register.  This helps us out in determining whether or not we need to either add to the room block or find an overflow hotel.

Registration Pricing Changes:

Part of the negotiation with the various hotels on room rates is our ability to guarantee a fair food and beverage minimum expenditure back to the hotel.

We have conducted a thorough analysis of the costs associated with hosting the annual AALSO Symposium and Workshops. Our findings indicate that the expenses per person currently exceed our registration fees, making it unsustainable for the organization. As a result, we have had to increase our registration fees once again, as outlined below.
  • Vendor Booth $2500
  • Non-Exhibiting Vendor $1500
  • Single Vendor Day Pass $750 (Includes Participation in the that Evening Event)
  • Single Event Guest $75/ea.
    • Ice Breaker
    • Monday Evening Aquarium
    • Tuesday Evening Mixer
    • Wednesday Certification Banquet

Henry Johnson “Ole Pumper” Award:

The “Ole Pumper” Award is named after Henry Johnson a past President and one of the originators of AALSO. Henry was a pump mechanic at SeaWorld Orlando and a major advocate for the development of AALSO Symposium and Workshops. His voice could be heard throughout the vendor hall guiding operators into lectures and workshops to take advantage of all the educational opportunities available. Henry’s mantra was “to pass on what you know to someone else so they can do their job better”, sharing knowledge with one another is what AALSO strives to provides to its operators. In honor of Henry’s contributions to AALSO the “Ole Pumper” Award was named after him to recognize a deserving member of the AALSO organization for their contributions. The recipients of the “Ole Pumper” Award are members who have given freely of themselves to ensure that the AALSO organization continues to survive, grow, and educate everyone who wants to learn.

Nominations will be reviewed by the AALSO Board and the Recipient announced during the Annual AALSO Symposium and Workshops.

Congratulations again to our Ole Pumper Award winners:
